"Bloom, Tour and Grow!" By Lila Johnson

In the age of Covid, it pays to be adaptable. Thank goodness modern technology allows us to have Garden Club Zoom meetings from our homes, although it’s nearly impossible to substitute the delicious lunch at Shawn O’Donnell’s. At our January meeting, we were able to boost our plant knowledge with renowned speaker Jessi Bloom.

She highlighted her philosophy outlined in her newest book, “Creating Sanctuary.” She spoke about sacred garden spaces, plant-based medicines and how plants can elevate our well-being. She also introduced us to her very own sanctuary tree, a Mount Fuji cherry named “Wanda” and reminded us, “If you don’t already do so, talk to your plants.”

On a side note, Jessi was involved in the design of Mill Creek’s Veterans Monument, which was a 2011 WALP* award winner in the Community Service category. *(Washington Association of Landscape Professionals). Her roots in the community are deep!

Zoom meetings also feature the Spin of the Wheel to award a raffle basket to one of our attending members. Cindy Klett was this month’s lucky winner. She won a “Little Glimpse of Spring” assortment which included a colorful bulb garden with a gift card to McAuliffe’s Valley Nursery, plus four bulb vases and a bag of hyacinths.
