There was jubilation in six beautiful gardens when several members planned a Mill Creek Garden Club members-only Garden Tour on August 10, 2021. “Plan it and they will come”—and they did!

The attendees were welcomed by sunshine and smiling garden owners: Cindy Klett, Lila Johnson, Julie Jacobson, Marla Nulph, Donna Risdon, and Judy Morrier.

Carpools were formed; everyone toured at their own pace, took photos, and asked questions of the garden owners.

The day was capped off with a “Finger Food Finale” in the last garden with a menu of croissant sandwiches, fruit kabobs, veggie cups, chips, and a choice of homemade cookies and desserts.

Cindy’s garden was on our very first Tour and she has a variety of plants that would knock your socks off. Plus, she and her husband enlarged their deck to create an outdoor room highlighted by a lovely chandelier, glass art, planted containers and a year-round kitchen. Everywhere you look, there’s something wonderful to see.

Lila’s garden was on our 2019 tour. This garden has been updated with a bluestone patio surrounded by plants and a dry stream bed with three stainless steel salmon swimming upstream. A Japanese Coral Bark Maple is the star behind the patio with an uplight illuminating it after dark. A dry stream bed with new plants was added to the front landscape.

Julie’s garden, overlooking the golf course, was on our first Tour, and it is always a crowd pleaser. This year a brick retaining wall was demolished, opening the front porch, and creating a more welcoming entrance. Julie has added whimsy with rocks, birdhouses, and flowers in the back. The covered patio is the perfect place to socialize and unwind.

Marla’s garden has been enjoyed on our Tour too, and her Sustainable Landscape designation is always interesting. It’s a natural flow of plants with great texture and a pond and waterfall that add to the serenity in the back garden. Her patio is a perfect spot to enjoy the natural beauty.

Donna is a tour first timer, and we were thrilled she volunteered. No arm twisting was involved! She and her husband have created welcoming areas tucked into their large garden. A stone pathway defined by trees and flowering Impatiens leads to the perfect “wine-sipping” chairs and a firepit. Walk across a large area of grass and wander onto the back patio, walk up some stairs past a waterfall and flowers to an inviting hot tub. Relaxing!

Judy’s garden has been on our Tour numerous times and is the perfect entertainment garden—lots of well-manicured lawn, a woodsy play area and a formal garden area with flowers. As you wander through, garden art catches your eye. A wonderful open-air cabana overlooks it all, complete with a full kitchen, serving island and outdoor patio seating.

As is done at our monthly meetings, there was an amazing Raffle Basket and new Garden Club member, Alice O’Grady was the lucky winner. What a great way to say, “Welcome!”

It was a wonderful day, bordering on “normal” in this age of Covid. Many people worked to make this event come together……thank you all, especially the “food and clean-up” crew who made us feel like special guests. What better place to step out together than in a garden—six of them!
