Issues That Matter: Mental Health and Veterans Discussion

On Thursday, February 22, the Mill Creek Library will host a panel discussion on the topic of Mental Health and veterans. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of Mill Creek City Hall, 15728 Main Street in Mill Creek.

Everyone always talks about PTSD,” said Chuck Wright, an army veteran and certified traumatic stress specialist who will be one of the panelists for the event. “But all veterans experience a range of experiences that might affect them their whole lives.”

Veterans transitioning out of the military face a range of mental health challenges, says Wright, from simple culture shock to coping with trauma, anxiety, and depression. Difficulty accessing help can compound veterans’ feelings of isolation and dislocation and have profound effects on their lives, families, and the community.

In addition to Wright, panelists for “Issues That Matter: Mental Health and Veterans” will include Laurie Akers, an Everett mental health counselor who specializes in veterans and their families, and Samantha R. Powers, Air Force veteran and Director of Student Veteran Life at the University of Washington.

After each panelist makes a few introductory remarks, there will be a moderated question-and-answer period, so those who want to attend should bring their questions and comments.

Sno-Isle Libraries’ Issues That Matter programs are meant to encourage community conversations on important topics. This winter’s series focuses on all aspects of mental health. For a complete schedule of Issues That Matter programs, go to www.sno-isle.org/issues-that-matter.
