The YWCA Inspire Luncheon on May 1, 2014, in Everett raised $158,000, well over their goal, and was supported and attended by 60 Mill Creek Women’s Club members who were captivated listening to speaker Cheryl Strayed get personal about her life. Her New York Times Best-selling memoir, “WILD,” is due to release in film in the fall with Reese Witherspoon playing Cheryl and Laura Dern as her mother.
Our own Snohomish County Executive, John Lovick, took time from his extraordinarily busy schedule on April 16 to speak with us regarding home safety. His best advice:
- Don’t give any personal information over the phone.
- Don’t answer the phone if you don’t recognize the caller’s number.
- Don’t leave your garage opener in your car.
- Don’t open the door to people you don’t know.
- Know your neighbors.
His reflection of his personal “Oso Moments” were heartfelt and overwhelming, never before witnessing, “Such tremendous outpouring of love and hope and caring” following the unimaginable destruction of the Oso Landslide.
Belle Provence generously hosted a Shawl Dawls Trunk Show on April 17th as an event for us and collected 40 large bags of donations for YWCA Pathways/Working Wardrobe, our primary philanthropic focus. They also contributed $800, a percentage of the sales that evening. Thank you!
Also in May we learned how to prepare some amazing spring foods paired with wines by Culinary Arts Northwest, bought Pathways Jewels, exchanged books, installed new Officers and Board, and began planning our November Auction, “Thanks for Giving.”
On May 21st, Jon Robert Throne, of Countryside Floral and Garden, will demonstrate enchanting floral arranging.
A sneak peek at fall, local writer Dan Brown, Boys in the Boat, (huge best-seller) will be our very special guest speaker in September.
