By Joni Kirk, Mill Creek Communications and Marketing Director.
If you’ve participated in a City of Mill Creek event or taken any recreation classes in the last decade, you’ve experienced Brian Davern’s work first-hand.
The Mill Creek City Council recognized Davern for 10 years of service at its February 27, 2018, meeting.
Davern joined the City of Mill Creek in February 2008 as a recreation assistant and was promoted to recreation and tourism manager in July 2016. In his role, he is part of the City’s Communications and Marketing team that seeks to grow community engagement.
Early in his career, Davern took over the City’s annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament and doubled its size. His basketball expertise took center court with the Youth Basketball League, and his involvement with the league enabled him to build relationships with families that keep them coming back. More than half of the league’s participants are from outside of Mill Creek, showing its strength in drawing people to the community.
Brian has a passion for developing recreational programs and events that bring the community together. His focus is on the long-term benefits in terms of fitness, community development and making Mill Creek a place that people are drawn to because of its great amenities.
Davern recently completed the Leadership Snohomish County program, and serves on the boards of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau and the Snohomish County Sports Commission.
His experience with these groups has given him a broad view of initiatives and trends impacting the region, which he has applied to his work in Mill Creek.
Davern has led the charge to improve the Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades, and launched a Veterans Advisory Committee to shape the City’s work with veterans, which led to the formation of a Mill Creek AMVETS group.
He is also developing a robust tourism program, including a tourism website, to feature Mill Creek’s dining, shopping, recreation and entertainment opportunities.
Davern has made a positive impact with his colleagues within the City office as well. He served on the Employee Recognition Committee for four years, was named Employee of the Year in 2014, and was nominated for this honor two other times.
In his spare time, Davern enjoys many sporting activities including skiing, snowboarding, boating, scuba diving, racquetball, and spending time with his family.
