From a May 18, 2021, Snohomish County press release.

Snohomish County Public Works, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, reopened Mountain Loop Highway to traffic between the Deer Creek and Barlow Pass gates on the west side of the pass the afternoon of Wednesday, May 19th.

The rest of the highway, a 12-mile unpaved section of the United States Forest Service roadway from Barlow Pass to the Bedal Campground, will remain closed while county crews complete maintenance from winter weather.

Mountain Loop Highway has been seasonally closed since December 2020.

“We are especially pleased to be opening this section two weeks early so those who want to use the campgrounds and other amenities on the west side of the pass have access,” Snohomish County Public Works Director Kelly Snyder said.

She went on to say, “This is a very popular outdoor destination and our crews are working hard to get the middle gravel section of the highway ready for public use. We hope that everyone will be respectful of the remaining closure while our staff work with heavy machinery to prep the road.”

Snohomish County Road Maintenance crews are actively clearing downed trees, filling potholes, and performing drainage work in some sections on the closed road between Barlow Pass and the Bedal Campground.

“Some sections of the road just need to dry out a bit more before we can safely open to the public,” Snohomish County Public Works Deputy Director and County Engineer Doug McCormick said. “But getting even a portion of the highway open this early is a big win for residents.”

Historically, Mountain Loop Highway remains closed until Memorial Day.

During the summer months, more than 100 cars on average use this route each day with up to 200 cars traveling each day on the weekend.
