Snohomish County’s $23.7 million 43rd Avenue SE/Sunset Road project is moving from the planning and preliminary design phase to the detailed design and right of way acquisition phases next year.

The project is designed to provide another north-south traffic corridor parallel to 35th Avenue SE in the rapidly growing North Creek area. It is scheduled to be complete by 2023.

Road improvements to 43rd Avenue SE north from Maltby Road to 188th Street SE and Sunset Road north from 188th Street SE to 184th Street SE will be made to accomplish the project's goals.

The county will hold a public open house at Willis Tucker Park Activity Center on Thursday evening, December 6, 2019, to discuss the proposed road improvements and answer questions from stakeholders.

A brochure mailed to residents near to the project lists the following project benefits:

  • Wider, paved roads to improve traffic mobility and safety.
  • Improved regional mobility.
  • Sidewalks for pedestrians and students attending local schools.
  • Bike lanes for cyclists to encourage non-motorized travel.
  • Roundabouts to alleviate congestion at intersections.
  • New signal to improve traffic flow at 180th St SE and Sunset Rd.
  • Stormwater quality improvement.
  • Improved street lighting to increase visibility.

The brochure gives some details of the planned improvements as follows:

South Section

43rd Ave SE from 188th St SE to Maltby Rd (SR 524).

  • Widen road to two 11-foot travel lanes with 6-foot shoulders on both sides and a 5-foot separated walkway on the east side.
  • Add 10-foot wide bioretention swales on both sides (designed to capture, treat and infiltrate stormwater runoff).
  • Add approximately 1,400 linear feet of new road to connect 200th St SE and 196th St SE.
  • Build two single-lane roundabouts on 43rd Ave SE at the intersections of Jewell Rd/196th St SE and SR 524/Maltby Rd.
  • Add new stormwater pond.
  • Add three underground stormwater chambers.
