Parents invited to help select Everett School District's new language arts curriculum materials

From an Everett Public Schools Press Release.

Everett Public Schools is launching the first of a three-phase process beginning in October 2013 to select sixth- through twelfth-grade English language arts curriculum materials. The first phase will focus on writing and two volunteer parents will be selected to assist in the process.

Two parents will be members of the selection team for each phase. One will be a parent of a high school student, and one will be a parent of a middle school student. The classroom materials selected in this process will be in sixth- through twelfth-grade language arts classrooms next fall.

Selection team responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate English language arts curriculum materials

  2. Recommend what curriculum materials the school board could consider approving

  3. Attend and participate in all of the team meetings, scheduled for full days on:
    · Oct. 14 and 22
    · Nov. 12 and 26
    · Dec. 5
    · Feb. 3 and 27

  1. Attend one after school two-hour meeting on Nov. 18.

  2. Be aware that other meetings might be needed in the process. Therefore, each team member must be flexible as we work together through this important process.

How to apply to be a phase one team member:

Email Dr. Catherine Matthews, Director of Curriculum and Assessment by 4 p.m. on Monday Sept. 30, 2013 with the following information:

  1. Your name, address, preferred email address and phone number

  2. School name(s) a child or children in your family attend

  3. Grade(s) of your child or children

  4. A statement of your availability to attend the meetings listed above and your willingness to attend others as needed

  5. A response to the question, “What motivates you to give your time and talents to helping the school board make a decision about classroom materials for secondary English language arts students?”

  6. A response to the question, “What is your experience with English language arts and/or English Language Arts education?”

How other parents will be involved:

All district parents and the community will be invited to learn about and comment upon curriculum materials during open houses in January 2014. More information will be available about those meetings later this fall.
