Out of all cities in Washington State, the City of Mill Creek was chosen by Waste Management Northwest and Recyclebank to participate in the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge. One community from each of the 50 states was chosen to compete for a $100,000 community sustainability grant from SC Johnson. The community with the highest recycling participation from July through December as measured by the Recyclebank website and determined by SC Johnson will win the prize.
Mayor Mike Todd encourages each Mill Creek resident to participate in this effort. Todd believes Mill Creek has a very good chance to win the challenge because Waste Management picks up recycling from 100% of Mill Creek residences.
“Mill Creek is thrilled to be representing Washington in the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge as it is the perfect way to kick-start the new recycling rewards program and local participation,” said Todd. “We encourage everyone to get involved — residents will have the opportunity to protect the environment, invigorate the local economy and help keep Mill Creek clean, while earning everyday savings from Recyclebank and working toward the grant from SC Johnson.”
By registering at the Recyclebank website, participants also earn Recyclebank Points that can be used to get discounts on household products and other rewards totaling up to $160 per year.
Here are the steps to take:
- Register for the challenge with Recyclebank via the website or by calling 1-888-727-2978.
- Recycle every week! Keep putting out your recycling container to earn Recyclebank Points.
- Log onto the Recyclebank website each week to report you are recycling and to receive Recyclebank Points. You have to report at least once a month for Mill Creek to receive credit for the challenge. Recyclebank also has iPhone and Android apps which can be used to report recycling activity.
A leaderboard at www.recyclebank.com/greenchoices will track progress each month, and the winning community will be announced in January 2013.
