Raffle drawings at Zoom meetings, a golden ticket in a bag of Valentine’s treats and great guest speakers are just part of the Garden Club experience during these weird times.
Toss in our FB page featuring photos of snow-covered gardens, a close-up picture of a “Can you name this plant?” and some rib-tickling cartoons; the Mill Creek Garden Club connection is alive and well.
PB&J, “Thanks for Giving” and “Share the Love” food drives allowed us to be kindhearted and kept the Club involved with the community-that-cares team. (MCGC members gave almost 1,000 lbs. of food and $580 in cash and checks to our Mill Creek Community Food Bank in February 2021.)
Our February “winner, winner, chicken dinner” raffle basket recipient was our Secretary Debby Cox. There was no fedora or spin-the-wheel to determine who won; Debby’s name was drawn from a plain cardboard box, but that did not dampen her enthusiasm. She loves Valentine’s Day, and we might venture a guess that red is one of her favorite colors!
The red felt basket put together by 2nd VP Connie Hannam contained a lovely fern and a $50 gift card for a meal at Emory’s on Silver Lake. Many of our raffle volunteers include a gift card to support a local business.
Garden Club officers decided to share the love with a pre-Valentine’s Day treat for all members who donated food or cash at our February 11 food drive for the Mill Creek Community Food Bank. We were all given a festive cellophane bag filled with chocolates; one bag contained a “golden ticket” hidden amongst the candy.
It took a while for our lucky winner to come forward; hmm, she must not have ripped opened that goodie bag while driving away from the drop off location! Such will power!
Eventually Kelly Hatfield had a chocolate craving, so she untied the ribbon on her treat bag and discovered it was her lucky day; the golden ticket was nestled between a Kit Kat bar and a Hershey Kiss!
Per instructions, she contacted 1st VP Kathy Thomas who promptly delivered the prize. Kelly was delighted to win a $25 gift card to McAuliffe’s Valley Nursery in Snohomish, a garden hat, and some other goodies to hit the garden running this spring.
What a lovely gesture from our Board, a sweet reward for caring about others. February was a win-win month, and especially so for involved Mill Creek Garden Club members. Sometimes all you have to do is be kindhearted and show up!
