More than half of the Garden Club membership gathered around their iPads and laptops to learn from January’s guest speaker Ladd Smith. Ladd, a co-founder of In Harmony Sustainable Landscape, Bothell, brought his fun sense of humor as he spoke about building our soil now for happier plants and easier Spring gardening.
He encouraged adding mulch in winter when the soil is wet and leaving fallen leaves on our flower beds (do remove from your lawn however). Finding earthworms in your garden soil is indeed a great thing. Yes, there was a picture of worms!
Ladd reminded us to “prune from the bottom,” not shear our shrubs and suggested several tools to get the job done. Shearing plants promotes growth which is probably not the intended goal. Shrubs are not supposed to look like a sphere, except in a topiary garden! We all unmuted to give Ladd a round of applause!
Next up the membership learned about a “Share the Love” food drive for our local Mill Creek Community Food Bank. This will take place on February 11, 2021, and is for MCGC only. A new list of “hoped for items” was shared: jelly, pancake mix, Hamburger Helper, Rice-A-Roni, and more. Our members have been so supportive of both the Food Bank and Toys for Tots. I look forward to sharing our results and maybe a photo of a rumored visit from Cupid.
Our members and the board have stepped up to put together raffle baskets every month and so many of our volunteers have purchased gift cards in support of our local businesses. Capping off the January 12, 2021, meeting was the spinning of the raffle prize wheel.
And the winner is! Linda Wood was the lucky recipient of a beautiful blooming Hellebores plant and a $50 Gift Card to our favorite meeting place, Shawn O’Donnell’s Grill and Pub! Linda was all smiles as she admired her prize—just for attending a fun Garden Club meeting!
At our Zoom meeting, Ladd Smith talked about the value of earthworms in our soil. They're a good sign! Photo courtesy of Mill Creek Garden Club.
